NA LCS Playoffs - DIG vs TSM

By Johnny Ngo on August 27, 2014

On Aug. 23, 2014, Team Dignitas (sixth place seed in the summer split) played against Team SoloMid (third place seed) in a quarter final best of five match. The winner of the match would move on to play in the semi finals for a chance at being one of three teams to represent the North American region at the World Championship. TSM came out on top with a 3-1 victory over DIG in a great series. Three of the four games were over 50 minutes long, and the match was overall close and well fought by both sides. Here’s a quick rundown of each game:

Game 1: TSM banned Nidalee, Lulu and Ryze. DIG banned Zed, Nunu and Alistar. During draft, TSM first picked Maokai and DIG picked Nasus in response to the tree. Crumbzz brought out Kha’Zix, likely to better secure Dragon and Baron Nashor. Shiphtur and Bjergsen both got very farmed, 4/0/2 and 9/1/3 respectively, while DIG’s bot lane was rather lackluster in their performance during the game. After 55 minutes, a ton of split pushing and over 500 stacks on Siphoning Strike, Nasus successfully backdoored the enemy nexus, securing game one for DIG.

Game 2: Bans during draft were exactly the same from TSM, and DIG banned Lee Sin over Nunu. Crumbzz took Nunu this game, while Amazing played Elise. TSM’s team comp was overall very similar to their Game 1 composition, where the top, mid, and support champions were the same. TSM played the early game very well and applied their advantages well, keeping DIG on their toes with a gold lead of about 6k by about 18 minutes. However, DIG clawed their way back up and the game was in their grasp. After Wildturtle valiantly died in an attempt to backdoor DIG’s base, DIG marched down mid lane as Amazing went through the backdoor to deal the final blows to their nexus. The game lasted 66 minutes, the longest game in this series.

Game 3: TSM decided to ban Shiphtur’s Ziggs away from him instead of Lulu and proceeded to first pick the champion. TSM’s team comp revolved entirely around Wildturtle’s Tristana. with the help of Lulu, Nunu, Orianna and Nami. With all of the heals, shields, and buffs that were applied to Tristana, even with the early kills that Shiphtur got on Ahri, the power of the megling gunner was too much for DIG to handle. As the game drew later, Wildturtle only became more of a threat and ended up carrying his team to victory with a final score of 12/1/3.

Game 4: Bans were exactly the same as the last game. ZionSpartan brought out his Olaf pick and Shiphtur played Xerath this game. TSM again has a very similar team comp as they had the previous games. They had very little variation in their team comps, as opposed to DIG who had almost completely different team comps each game. After a bad early game, getting caught and lacking proper vision control, TSM took down DIG in 34 minutes, securing their spot in the semifinals against LMQ.

A few interesting facts about the match:

- DIG secured 9 barons and TSM secured 1.
- KiWiKiD had 24 total deaths across the series, the most deaths of any player on DIG or TSM.
- Bans from both teams were rather consistent: Nidalee, Zed, Ryze and Alistar were banned all four games.
- Lustboy played Nami every game, only dying a total of four times across the series.
- TSM had choice of side for games 1, 3 and 5. DIG had choice of side for games 2 and 4, and intentionally chose red side for every match.

Big congratulations to TSM for coming out on top in their match against DIG. They will be playing LMQ in a best of 5 series on August 30, 2014 at 2PM Central time. Stay tuned!
