Thank You Notes And Their Importance

Many call the current times the ‘digital age,’ and some have even commented that this generation of us college-aged kiddos is very close to that ‘me-generation’ of the baby boomers because of all the time some of us youngins devote to not only being on our phones, but also all of the time we may spend staring at nothing but ourselves.

I’m the first one to admit that I’m not only my worst critic but also my biggest fan. And well, having that inflated of an ego could be my downfall but, it isn’t. Saying thank you to those who helped me get to where I currently am is a no-brainer.

Because, as much pride and work as I put into myself and all of the results I produce, I know that I would not have gotten there without help from those kind individuals. So, if and when appropriate, I do tend to send notes of thanks to professors, employers, or even anyone who took the two seconds to give me some kind of aid.

I get asked, ‘Well, why?’

Half of that may be part of the way I was raised. Since I was little, it was very much drilled into me that you are to show thanks for even the slightest bit of help. And, that answers part of the question but then I get asked why in the world I send thank you notes.

For starters, it does not take a long time to simply write out ‘Thank You’ or ‘Thank You for your help’ on a piece of paper. Sending an email or text message with the same message may be even faster.

Android or iOS user, sending a Thank You text is simple (http://www.howtogeek.com).

As I mentioned before, everyone always comes at us millennials for how glued to our phones we are and taking that small bit of time out of our day to send a thanks someone’s way does help to redeem what people stereotype our generation as.

But, going even further, sending out a thank-you can really make someone’s day. While most of us may not like to admit it, everyone has their personal day-to-day struggles that not everyone sees. Work, school, family, anything can stress anyone out. If they are taking a second to offer some kind of help to you, please understand that they are taking time out of their very packed day, no matter how much you may not even be aware of that. Showing gratitude for the time or information they gave you reinforces the fact that you very much do appreciate the help they offered you.

So, next time you send that messy English essay to your best bud for grammar clean-up or are looking for a professor to meet with you outside of their office hours and they come through for you, don’t forget to say thanks in some way.
