8 Fashion Necessities For Every College Freshman

By Amanda Cohen on July 10, 2016

In about a month and a half, eager young men and women will step foot onto their college campus of choice. Parents have briefed their kids on safety measures when roaming their college campus. Orientation leaders have walked kids around campus and have taken them to all of the hot spots. Advisors have helped kids finalize their Fall 2016 semester schedules and guided them on the path to academic success.

Now, where is my place in all of this? I’ll tell you! I am here to tell upcoming freshmen of essential fashion items to pack because, just to warn you, most dorm room closets are not that big (sorry to break the news to you)! Keep reading if you want to jumpstart your college packing list (I promise these suggestions are ones that I wish I knew when I was a freshman).

1. A sweatshirt and/or pair of sweatpants that bears your college’s name on the front – I know you are used to shoving your high school clothing items to the back of your closet, but I promise you that you will feel proud to sport a college sweatshirt on campus (who knows, maybe you will even use it for a tailgate!).

2. A quality pair of workout shorts (and maybe even a matching top) – Worried about the freshmen 15? I know I was. Nothing helps you stay motivated to work out like a nice, cute, and stylish workout outfit. The cuter the outfit, the more you will want to go to the gym and show it off!

3. A t-shirt that shows where you attended high school – You will get homesick when you first get to school and I promise that it is 100 percent normal. When you do feel a little blue, wearing one of your high school shirts will make you feel comfortable and will remind you of home. (Hint: bring your tackiest, ugliest high school shirt because when times get rough, you will put on this shirt and it will make you laugh).

4. A pair of bath slippers that are not Ugg slippers – When you are walking around your dorm room or walking down the hall, or even walking to get a package, you don’t want to have to put on your sneakers or wear your shower shoes. I promise you that it is perfectly acceptable to wear a comfy, fuzzy pair of slippers anywhere in your residence hall. They don’t have to be fancy, just anything that is cozy and provides a barrier between your feet and the floor.

5. A bathrobe – I am a sucker for a good bathrobe. Nothing feels better than finishing a long day of classes and extracurricular activities, showering, putting your hair up in a towel, and putting on your cozy bathrobe and slippers. Similarly to the slippers, your bathrobe doesn’t have to be anything fancy, it just has to be comfortable.

Some people prefer knee-length robes, robes that come to your mid-thigh, or floor-length robes. Whatever you prefer, you rock it while carrying your shower caddy from the bathroom back to your room!

6. A sturdy, full-coverage shower cap – I know this may sound weird and I know what I am about to say next may seem gross to some, but sometimes in college you are not going to have time to wash your hair (which is actually better for your hair anyways). During finals, you will be living in the library probably wearing sweatpants, a t-shirt, comfortable shoes, and a headband.

Yes, it’s important to wash your body, but going through the process of washing your hair can be long. So, go to your local drug store, buy some wacky shower cap that has ducks or something random on it, use it during some of your more stressful weeks, and then finish off your “look” with a ponytail and headband post-shower.

7. A pair of plain, black, Lululemon leggings – Look, I know Lululemon is expensive, but I promise you that one pair of their leggings will last you your entire college experience. Sure, you may want to dress nicely for your first day of classes, but after that I promise you that you will want to keep your jeans in the back of your closet and substitute them for comfy, moveable leggings.

I say Lululemon because their material is thick enough for some of the colder schools, but not too thick for the warmer schools. The best part about plain black leggings is that you can wear them with anything (wear a nice sweater to look nicer, or the college sweatshirt you have in your arsenal to be more casual).

8. An item that reminds you of your family – Do I really need to explain the importance of this? I took a romper out of my sister’s closet, a pair of shoes out of my mom’s closet, and a large sweatshirt from my dad’s closet. Whenever I wore these items, it made me feel right at home.

There are obviously more items that upcoming freshmen will need in college, but these are some of the important ones. So, to all of you anxiously awaiting to move into your dorm rooms, I wish you good luck and happy shopping!
